Girl with Scythe

I created this by pounding out a slab of B-mix, white high-fire stoneware. I have a great pounding tool that I bought from Junya Xiao at her workshop in March 2006. The great thing about pounding out a slab instead of rolling it out is that you get even compression, which leads to reduced warp and cracking.

The glazes are Duncan Envision, fired to cone 06 in an electric kiln. For the writing, I used a black cobalt stain and a brush, overglazing with Duncan Envision ‘parchment’. On her face, I used a brown stain as an underglaze to highlight the details of her face. Finished size is 14″ by 8.5″. The tiles are seperate, and fit together like a puzzle.
